This week, to celebrate parkrun’s 18 th birthday, parkwalk was launched around the
world. The aim is to encourage more people to come and walk 5k at parkrun on a
Saturday morning. Walkers have always been welcome at parkrun, but hopefully
parkwalk will let more people know that everyone, whether they walk, jog or run, will
find a friendly and supportive welcome at parkrun at 9am every Saturday morning.
It was a first for me too this week as I was the 36 minute pacer. I love parkrun and
usually just run or walk at whatever pace feels right for that day. Today though I
needed to try to run a specific pace.
I had a little practice in the week, but I must have been a bit nervous because on
Thursday I woke from a dream where I had turned up late to a rainy parkrun,
forgotten my running shoes and had to run in wellington boots carrying a tray of
cake!
Thankfully, after heavy rain in the night, Saturday dawned dry and sunny. I managed
to get to Shinewater about 8.30, with my running shoes and donned my purple pacer
vest – so far so good.
I needn’t have worried. I just kept my eye on my average pace and made sure it was
a but under what was needed for sub 36 minutes. Shinewater looked fabulous in the
sunshine and I had a great time. Lisa kept me company most of the way and I am
delighted that she got a big PB – well done Lisa and the other 21 people who got
PBs this morning. Congrats also to Paul Baker doing his 100 th parkrun.
I will definitely be pacing again and recommend it to anyone who wants to volunteer
but doesn’t want to miss out on their 5k run, jog, or walk. If you want to run or walk
there are several roles you can do and still get your 5k done: tailwalker, first timers’ briefing, pacer, set up or shut down, course checker, or, if you are speedy, run and then do scanning.
All the volunteer roles are easy and someone will explain exactly what to do. The
best bit is the buzz you get from helping out and being part of the team. Talking of
which thanks to the 42 volunteeers who made this event possible:

been there from the beginning, that’s more than a decade of commitment. Please do
take a look at the volunteer roster and help them out by volunteering early and filling
that roster page.

P olegate Plodders in plenty this morning for a “Volunteer take-over” – even more
than the great turn out for their summer social game of rounders! – proving that
volunteering at Parkrun is right up there in the list of worthwhile and enjoyable
reasons to get out of bed on a Saturday morning!
O ne or two of us managed to get in a run as well, by choosing one of the volunteer
roles that lets you do that, like First timers briefing - and Run report writer!
L ots of thanks also to the non-Polegate Plodders volunteers this morning – Julie,
Jemma, Leon and Tom. I love Jemma’s marshal position on the summer course
where you get to see runners 3 times!
E vent number one for a few people this morning! Congratulations and Welcome to
Alastair, Naomi and Jude! Hope this was the first of many!
G enetics I am sure play a big part in Arnold Weston’s superb running, coming in first
with a time of 17:26! Need I say he’s the son of a Polegate Plodder!
A ge grade percentage seems to become more important the older you get as a
Parkrun runner. A big shout out this week to Emma Towers (VW 50-54), who got
the highest mark this week at 78.55%, with a time of 21:36!
T ourists today came from Maldon, Reigate, Littlehampton, Burgess Hill, Colchester,
Orpington, and Crawley, and maybe one or two other places. Welcome all, hope
you enjoyed the course!
E ynsford running club also joined in this morning from north Kent with 13 of their
members; they were making a weekend of it by also walking the Seven Sisters, and
visiting local pubs. Their running ethos is start and finish at a pub – like it!
P ersonal Bests for 22 people this morning! Well done everyone! Special mention to
Archie Franklin aged 11 who hurled round this morning for a PB of 20:19!
L ots of congratulations to Jonnie and Fenella on their 30 th Anniversary today. Nothing
like a shared love of running to keep a couple strong!
O ne year older for Stuart Pelling. Thanks for the cake! Can’t help noticing that your
age grade percentage is the highest in 2022 than it’s ever been!
D ogs love Parkrun too; great to see a few this week, including our Polegate Plodders
official mascot, Sidney, in his club colours harness. And this is my chance to publicly
apologise for the enthusiastic response Willow has each time to the pre-run claps.
Sorry all!
D arth Vader I discovered today is my neighbour running under a pseudonym!
E vent number 498 was this week, so don’t miss out on all the fun in a fortnight!
R unning clubs are a great way of meeting other runners and getting in some extra
runs in the week. So welcome to anyone who wants to join our friendly all abilities
Polegate Plodders running club!
S umming up Parkrun in one word this morning – here’s what some of the Polegate
Plodders said - Community; Inclusive; Breathless (but remember it’s a run not a
race!); Like-minded people; Fun; Just awesome!
Don't forget we have our 500th parkrun on 8th October. Wear blue (official colour of the 500 milestone) and stay behind for refreshments and cake! Just bring a cup, we will provide the rest.
We also have our next parkrun quiz on 10th October at Eastbourne Rugby Club.
The event was made possible by 26 volunteers:
Natalie DAWSON • Jane THOMAS • Ian WESTON • Kevin BURTON • Sally WESTON • Jeremy LOWE • Peter COOK • David GREENAWAY • Lorraine WILKINSON • Lisa PRICE • Jamie MARTIN • Mary NORTHWAY • Noj NORTHWAY • Liam BROOKS • Karly HOUSE • Chris FINDLAY-GEER • Martin SALES • Jemma LANDER • Julie TREMLIN • Sarah DOHERTY • Helen BLEWITT • Nikki LOATS • Rachel MORAN • David MORAN • Leon BURNHAM-JONES • Thomas PARRY

There is nothing like being gently pushed into volunteering at parkrun. However there is nothing quite like volunteering at parkrun. I will put my hands up and say I don't volunteer enough. Never have! Turning up each week expecting others to take the roles that are needed to make these runs happen. My friend Fenella has a leading role in Eastbourne parkrun and I can imagine to stress levels reached when those roles aren't filled. Like she said if everyone did one slot every so often those stress levels would disappear.
So today's parkrun was chilly and bright. Perfect conditions to run in if a bit damp underfoot on the grass. Once that heart rate elevated you soon didn't notice though as am sure the days left on the summer route are numbered. Long Live the winter route!
Well done to all those that run, jogged or walked today and be thankful that you can.
Big shoutout to those who took part for the first time including Max parker and Cam Young.
Well done to Jonathan Scotcher who used Eastbourne parkrun to complete the last 3 miles of his South West Coast Path virtual challenge which due to injury has taken him 4 months.
Milestones today were Lucy Wright, David Wharton their 50th and Junior Bayly Wright his 10th. Although not an official milestone Keith Weblin ran his 200th with his beautiful 4 legged friend. Quite a few doggies today, all on their best behaviour!
There were some great PB's today including 4 of the top 10 finishers: Gary Manley, Alison Moore, Archie Franklyn and Byron Roberts. Christian Fielding and Olly Allison showed even after 100+ runs a PB is possible, Alex Balkwill celebrated her PB by sorting the finish tokens back at St Wilf's.
Emma Towers topped the age grade board with just under 80%.
We welcomed visitors including Julie Farrant from Clacton, Leigh Briggs from South Africa and others from Great Yarmouth, Bishop Stortford and Milton Keynes.
The event was made possible by 27 volunteers including our 3 new D of E students:
Pam HART • Danny GARBETT • Graham PENNY • Natalie DAWSON • Amy HOPE • Jeremy LOWE • Tracy ERRIDGE • Phil WOOD • Alex BALKWILL • Neil MASKELL • Jemma LANDER • Paul CUTTELL • Helen SANDERSON • Anneka REDLEY • Peter WILKINSON • Nikki LOATS • Kirsty WILKINSON • Thomas CUTTELL • Ceridwen PARKER • Charlotte BARNES • Leon BURNHAM-JONES • Derek CASWELL • Mary CAYZER • Helen STILES • Mark SWEETING • Carl LEPPARD • Thomas PARRY
We have our 500th parkrun on 8th October. Please wear blue (official colour of the milestone t-shirt) and stay behind for refreshments. Just bring a cup, we will provide the rest! Also please join us at Eastbourne Rugby Club for our Quiz night raising money for St Wilfs on 10th October.
