Is Warhorse One movie a true story? ›

But suspend disbelief for two hours and enjoy a low budget indie war movie. Remember, its not a documentary and never claims to be.

It's pretty good, it's entertaining, there are some tense scenes. It's not the best war film out there, but it's ok for a non-war-knowledgeable human.

Warhorse One (2023) has a darling child actor, and a lead actor that is able to use weapons with an authentic skill. It also is so low budget that Afghanistan is actually filmed in Texas, the bad guys shake their guns to pretend that they are firing and they have white guys dressed up as Taliban.

One of the SEAL team operators, Master Chief Richard Mirko (Johnny Strong), is thrown from the wreckage, miraculously surviving the crash. With the rest of his team killed in action, Mirko continues his search for the missionaries, but finds their vehicle ambushed, the only survivor: a traumatized 5 year old child.

The book tells the history of Warrior from his birth in an Isle of Wight field to his amazing life as a famous war horse, and how a combination of the horse's extraordinary character and some unbelievable twists of fate helped him survive a war which claimed the lives of so many horses.

The movie uses formulaic cliches to paint Mirko as a hero. He is a skilled marksman and works tirelessly to defend the lives of the people he's been sent to save, such as defenseless five-year-old Zoe (Athena Durner).

Emilie's grandfather tells Albert about how Joey and Topthorn came to their farm, and that Emilie had lost the will to live after they were taken from her, with Emilie fading away and dying at just 15 years old.

There are not many happy endings in War Horse. The first such character we meet after Joey leaves the Narracott's farm may be the best. Tom Hiddleston does a complete 180-turn from his disturbed villain role of Loki in Thor with his instantly empathetic and lovable performance as Captain Nicholls.

The film will be released in limited release in the United States on June 30, 2023, and will be released on VOD and digitally on July 4, 2023. Warhorse One was a released in DVD and Blu-ray formats on November 7, 2023.

That said, WARHORSE ONE is marred by some strong foul language, including eight “f” words and very strong war violence with multiple gun battles. Also, in one scene, the hero mentions a Muslim soldier working for the American who sacrificed his own life for the hero's platoon.
