Strong wrote and directed the film, which was shot in Texas and tells the story of a Navy SEAL master chief (played by Strong) helping missionaries evacuate Afghanistan as U.S. forces pull out of the nation's 20-plus-years-long involvement.

Parents need to know that Warhorse One is a predictable wartime drama about a rescue mission set in Afghanistan with plenty of violence and some strong language.

This film combines two of Spielberg's favorite themes as a director -- family and war. The stand-out performances deserve credit for making the movie's 146 minutes worth your while.

One of the SEAL team operators, Master Chief Richard Mirko (Johnny Strong), is thrown from the wreckage, miraculously surviving the crash. With the rest of his team killed in action, Mirko continues his search for the missionaries, but finds their vehicle ambushed, the only survivor: a traumatized 5 year old child.

That said, WARHORSE ONE is marred by some strong foul language, including eight “f” words and very strong war violence with multiple gun battles. Also, in one scene, the hero mentions a Muslim soldier working for the American who sacrificed his own life for the hero's platoon.

After a SEAL team helicopter is downed en route to the rendezvous point, the lone surviving operator must evade hostile insurgents and navigate treacherous terrain while guiding his one remaining charge--a traumatized young girl--to safety.

Warhorse One (2023) has a darling child actor, and a lead actor that is able to use weapons with an authentic skill. It also is so low budget that Afghanistan is actually filmed in Texas, the bad guys shake their guns to pretend that they are firing and they have white guys dressed up as Taliban.

While some filmmakers come to Utah to make Westerns, others are drawn to the state's “anytown USA vibe,” Virginia Pearce, the commission's director, tells Variety's Kathy A. McDonald. “Hallmark and Disney love shooting here because [there are] many small-town feels within an hour of Salt Lake.”

On the way there their chopper is shot down, Mirko is blown out of the craft and not only survives the fall but gets up, dusts himself off, and decides to complete the mission by himself.

Although the equine hero of War Horse is fictional, his story is based on the true horrors experienced by the eight million horses who died on all sides.

So for the cavalry, armed with only swords, to go against machine guns would have been pointless and was not a probable strategy to use in the war. Another inaccurate part of the film is that the trenches were not angular and straight. These inaccuracies are small but do not hinder the movie's authenticity.

Somewhat confoundingly, during the production, ten or so different horses were used to play Joey, including the superstar thoroughbred horse actor who played Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit is apparently the Brad Pitt of horses, and was brought in to handle the serious scenes.
